Elizabeth Habuko

Elizabeth Habuko is a Black Knight mercenary who works under the name Blade. She is a former Dark Knight Loslorien who is currently on the run after abandoning her post in search of information about her father.

Background

Elizabeth Habuko was born and raised in the relatively small fishing village of Asuna, located on the southern shores of Glacia and a part of the Holy Lodissian Empire. She was raised by her mother Juno, whom had taken over her late husband’s job as the town shipwright. Elizabeth learned much from her mother, including ship crafting, mastery with tools and axes, a strong independent will, and a harboring hatred towards the foreigners of Valleria for taking the life of her husband during the last Vallerian wars.

Elizabeth had a fire burning within her, not only for adventure and excitement but to avenge the death of a father she never knew. Her tenacity and athletic prowess caught the eye of the Holy Order, who soon offered her a chance to join the ranks of High Priest Sardian’s private army. She eagerly took the chance, and quickly became one his most proficient troops, working her way up the ranks of command while learning of the dark arts of Bane magic. When the time came to send a contingent of Dark Knights to the Vallerian Isles to settle some territorial disputes among the locals, Elizabeth was an ideal soldier to send.

The voyage to the islands was no short journey, and when she was not training her battle skills or magic prowess, to pass the time Elizabeth began sharpening her battleaxe in preparation for her first real battle. With perhaps a bit too much zealous energy, she ended up jerking the sharpener against the blade, causing the axe-head to have a vicious serrated edge. Elizabeth smirked, knowing that while it may not be as sharp, it was sure to cause a significant amount of pain to any recipient of her blows.

The excitement of her first battle was exhilarating, and Elizabeth never felt more alive in striking down the enemies of her people and God. These were the bastards who had taken from her a father, someone to look over her and teach her and love her as a child. Years of pent of rage had found an outlet: the shattered bones and severed limbs of the people of Valleria.

That fiery energy did not last forever however. The battles themselves never stopped fueling Elizabeth’s fury; however, it was the aftermath that started to wear on her conscience. Her fellow Dark Knights showed no mercy on or off the battlefield, often raping and pillaging the remnants of a newly razed village. Elizabeth found no joy in these actions and would quietly return to her barracks. This in itself wasn’t as concerning as the actions of the kingdoms for which they were being contracted out to assist. During times her company traveled back through previously conquered territories, Elizabeth saw that the villages were soon brutalized by their new owners. The battles had been fought and the victors determined; for what reason should the suffering and oppression continue? What was the point of this fighting if not to right what was wrong and better the lives of all?

Things took an unexpected turn for Elizabeth one day when she received a message from her mother. She had fallen unexpectedly ill, and was unsure if she could survive by the time Elizabeth could make it back. Knowing this, she also wrote to her that she could not pass while knowing she had been lying to her daughter all his time, and divulged that her father had not actually been killed in the Vallerian war, but was Vallerian himself. Juno still considered him dead as he never returned to them after the war, but she still blamed him for abandoning her to raise their daughter alone. Elizabeth was shocked and heartbroken by this news, but had little time to react as she heard loud shouting coming from outside. She instantly knew that her letter had been intercepted, and it was an oversight now that it wasn’t until now that she was going to be brought in and questioned on this new information. Elizabeth didn’t have time for that, she suddenly had so much more to find out. Who was her father? Was her mother alive? What had happened when she was born? Could she abandon her post and her life here to find these answers? This last one she quickly knew the answer to: yes. She only had time to grab her axe and run out into the rain.

Elizabeth tried but failed to run undetected, and found she was being chased by a contingent of guards. It was raining hard, and even in the best conditions she could not outrun them forever. A crossbow fired, and hit her square in the right calf. Gasping in pain, Elizabeth knew she had to find a different approach to her escape. She squinted through the downpour and found a partially concealed sewer. Dashing there, Elizabeth heaved the cover off and jumped in while catching the lid with her axe-head, bringing it back over the sewer. The sewer was dark and filled with putrid water with no exit; Elizabeth stayed nearly submerged in the sewer for hours, praying to the Sun God that her pursuers would not check her hiding place. Eventually, the rain stopped and she emerged into the foggy morning. She hobbled into town, staying to the streets and staying out of sight. She managed to steal some heavy rags and fashioned them into a concealing cloak, and found a half-bottle of moonshine which she drank before she was forced to cut off her right leg due to gangrene.

Since then, Elizabeth has been living a muted life as a mercenary under the name Blade, taking jobs when she can for money to leave a meager existence, hoping to find any information about her father or find a way back to Lodis to discover the fate of her mother. Armed with her greataxe and a steel leg to replace the one she lost, Elizabeth still has the torn, stained letter from her mother, containing her only clue to help her find her father: his name, SIMON.
