Three Act Structure

This guide is how to outline the typical cinematic plot structure, consisting of three acts of two to four parts each.

Act I

Introduction of the Character

Introduction of the Setting

The Turning Point

The main character(s) will make an irrevocable decision that changes their lives forever. This decision can be made on the heels of a dramatic event caused by an NPC or faction.

Act II

The Subplot

The Subplot is used to flesh out the universe and/or the main plot details.

The Love Interest

The Love Interest is not necessarily a romantic love, it can be a friendship, comrade, or love of something intangible. The main hook here is a love is highlighted for the main characters, which can be used to fuel the plot with loss or betrayal.

The Mid-Point

The "shift": where the victims become the heroes or the heroes become victims.

The Plan

The Execution

Execution of the initial plan should result in failure and highlight what went wrong. Act II should end with feelings of despair and hopelessness.

Act III

Failure

Success

Success should highlight what the characters did right and what they have learned to achieve victory.

Different Structures

121 Structure

Consolidates the structure into Introduction -> Turing Point -> Plan -> Midpoint -> Execution -> Trying again and succeeding.

122 Structure

Follows the Act structure more closely, introduces the love interest and sub plots elements.
